About Auckley
Out just east of Doncaster and right next to Doncaster, Sheffield Airport, more commonly referred to as Robin Hood Airport, is based on the site of the former RAF Finningley, although the land it directly between the two villages.
As a village of around 4,000 people, Auckley has grown quite significantly in the 20th century, as an 1870 reference to the settlement noted that there were just 69 houses, with a population of just over 300. It was the founding of the RAF base that helped the area grow in popularity, which has continued since the conversion of the site for commercial airline travel.
As a fairly rural area, there is an annual agricultural show that is held just off of Common Lane in the north of the village. The Auckley Show includes a number of stands and stalls, family entertainments and various competitions to see whose locally grown produce is the best of the season.
For many years the Hayfield Lakes in Auckley held the yearly Fish’o’Mania contest, a sporting competition for anglers that were usually shown live on Sky Sports.
