The village of Cusworth has been incorporated into the neighbouring town of Doncaster, and is now a suburb of the larger settlement. It was recorded as a place in its own right with the 1086 Domesday Book, and its land was once owned by Sir Christopher Wray, the 16th century politician and judge who was once speaker in the House of Commons.
Although the original Cusworth Manor has long since been demolished, in the 1740s, the influential Wrightson family decided to build a sizeable property just outside of the village. Cusworth Hall was a home for descendents of the family for over 200 years, until Doncaster town council purchased the building in 1961 and converted it into a museum that still operates today.
Cusworth Lane now acts as the only dividing line between the village and its neighbour Scawsby to the north. As well as the extensive grounds around Cusworth Hall, there is still an extensive green circle of land around the village, including Newlands Park and a number of sizeable farmer’s fields. That means that despite being so centrally placed in an urban landscape (being also located next to an industrial/retail estate), Cusworth still maintains much of the agrarian feel that it has kept for many centuries.
