About Kilnhurst
Nestled on the banks of the River Don, Kilnhurst now forms part of a wider settled area with Swinton and Mexborough, although still maintains its own identity as a village.
Two famous sons of Kilnhurst are brothers Charles and David Jagger. The sons of a local colliery manager, the brothers both became successful artists following the First World War. While Charles became a sculptor, producing a number of pieces for war memorials, David became a painter, most notably of Lord Baden-Powell, the founder of the Scout movement.
Just off of the Hooton Road is the Kilnhurst Ings Nature Reserve, a created and managed wetland habitat that was formed from post-industrial land to encourage a variety of wildlife including voles, waterfoul and wading birds. Snipe, kestrels, long-tailed tits and kingfishers have all been seen in the area, making it a must for ornithologists and wildlife photographers alike!
The parish church of St Thomas, Kilnhurst, is located on a prominent point of Wentworth Road, overlooking the railway line on its way into Rotherham.
