About Thurcroft

The village of Thurcroft is a part of the wider Metropolitan Borough of Rotherham and was based around a strong mining community until its last colliery was closed in 1991 despite an attempt by the workforce to buy it out. The Thurcroft Colliery was first sunk in 1909 but could not start extracting coal until four years later due to an expected geographical fault leading to flooding of tunnels.

It is not known the exact age of Thurcroft, but there are Viking roots, as with some other settlements in the area, and the village name is thought to be a derivation of “thorr”, meaning Thunder. The village appears in written form in 1319, referenced in the Dictionary of English Place-Names as the “Enclosure of a man called Thorir”.

Despite being built in an older style, the parish church of St Simon and St Jude was only constructed in 1937. It is one of two places of Christian worship available in the village, with the other being an offshoot of Liberty Church that meets in the building next to Thurcroft Welfare Community Hall.

Whether you live in Thurcroft itself or anywhere around Rotherham, there will be a shutter style to suit your design ideas. Get in touch with us at Shuttercraft and book your free home appointment today.
