About Corfe Mullen

Located just north of Poole, the Dorset village of Corfe Mullen has very historic beginnings, with archaeological evidence in the area showing people in the area probably in the Palaeolithic era. Flint axeheads have been found from that time, though settlement in Corfe Mullen seems to have begun in earnest from around 3000BC.

Under their occupation, a sizeable Roman fortress was built in the Corfe Mullen area, to the north of the current village, being only 3 miles from the site at Badbury Rings, and easily defendable on one side due to the River Stour. This wooden structure was only temporary, being dismantled in the 70s AD.

One of the biggest villages in England, with over 10,000 residents, Corfe Mullen is largely used as a home for commuters into nearby towns of Wimborne, Poole, Bournemouth, Verwood, and even over as far as Southampton, which is about an hours’ drive up the A31.

Just east of the main village, Corfe Barrows Nature Park comprises around 90 hectares of wild land and Bronze Age burial mounds (the Barrows of its name). Much of the nature park is open to the public and is popular for walking and bird watching. As an open space, it has only been officially monitored and managed since 2016, when it was established as a nature park for the first time.
