About Christchurch

Making up part of the Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole unitary authority, the seaside town of Christchurch is just west of the New Forest, and was founded as a settlement in around AD650 when missionaries were sent to the area by Birinus, the first Bishop of Dorchester.

Nestled at the mouth of the rivers Stour and Avon, Christchurch Bay is protected by the two naturally occurring sandbanks of Mudeford Spit and Hengistbury Head. The latter is an incredibly popular beach in the summer, and also a site of significant heritage and scientific interest, with artefacts being found dating from the Palaeolithic era.

Although little remains of it today, the skyline of Christchurch was once dominated by a Norman stone castle that underwent significant fortification by Richard de Redvers, to resist the king’s troops during the Anarchy with Empress Maude in the 1140s. Christchurch Castle again saw action during the English Civil War, and in 1652 Oliver Cromwell ordered it to be slighted, reducing the risk of a military uprising in the area. All that remains are two sections of the keep’s wall and a nearby nobleman’s house which was built at the same time.

Well connected along the South via the A35 and consequently the A338, Christchurch also has an international reach, donating its name to the largest city in the south of New Zealand, as well as being only a few miles from Bournemouth International Airport in the nearby village of Hurn, which runs regular flights throughout Turkey and Europe.

Whether you own stylish semi-detached, classic townhouse or a sleek modern apartment, there are shutters to suit your tastes. Book a free survey today to discover more.
