About Exmouth

Located on the mouth of the River Exe, where the 60-mile navigation finally joins with the English Channel, the port town of Exmouth has been a strategically important part of the south coast at least as far back as the 11th century. However, it is thought the settlement has existed for much longer, with Byzantine coins from the 5th century AD being found on Exmouth beach in the 1970s.

Although its location makes Exmouth a natural port, it has never really been used for commercial shipping, due in part to the shallower waters nearer to the quayside, as well as the dominance of nearby Exeter, which for many centuries owned the dockland in Exmouth and so controlled its relative fortunes. By the time the docks were rebuilt in the 1860s, Exmouth was more predominantly known as a holiday resort, especially with the development of a railway line to the town, bringing mass tourism to the quiet Devon location.

With around two miles of sandy beach just a short walk from the town centre, Exmouth lent itself to its growing seaside resort status. Exmouth is also considered to be the gateway to the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site. Added to the global list of recognition in 2001, the Jurassic Coast is a 96-mile stretch of the south that seems to have a higher concentration of fossils, originally discovered in the 18th by Georges Cuvier, leading to the study of palaeontology.

The town is home is an indoor market and a range of shops to be browsed and explored amongst the splendid regency architecture. It is also a popular destination for a variety of watersports including kite surfing, kayaking and windsurfing.
