About Bridport
Located just upriver of West Bay, the seaside village where the River Brit meets the English Channel, Bridport is a market town with Saxon origins that was once a hive of the British rope-making industry.
Just south of the town is the convergence of the rivers Asker and Brit, with the river Simene also joining the watercourse to the west of Bridport. It is the close relationship with nearby rivers that led to the name of the town, as the Old English word ‘Brydian’ refers to a place at the river Bride.
Renamed Port Bredy by Thomas Hardy to feature in his novels centred around the fictional Wessex, Bridport is also the birthplace of PJ Harvey, the songwriter and singer who is currently the only artist to have won the coveted Mercury Music Prize more than once.
Within the parishes of Bridport, Allington, Bradpole and Bothenhampton, making up the vast majority of the area around the town, are 514 listed buildings and structures. That reflects the historically significant role of the area around Dorset. The town’s 18th century Town Hall was designed by architect William Tyler, a founding member of the Royal Academy of Arts.
