About Poole

With local historical artefacts dating from as early as the Iron Age, Poole has long existed as a settlement due to its location as a natural harbour that can be easily defended. Although maintaining its status as a town in its own right, the edges of Poole, Bournemouth and Christchurch have gradually become less clear, and the local council unitary authority which covers the area now effectively serves a single conurbation of nearly half a million people.

Popular as a tourist destination, Poole has its own quay, shopping precinct, museums and centre for the arts. Luxury motorboat company Sunseeker International is based in Poole and has its main manufacturing plant at the harbourside. Sunseeker yachts have appeared in four consecutive James Bond movies, most recently 2008’s Quantum of Solace.

Nearby in Poole Harbour is Brownsea Island, best known for its association with the Scouting movement and home to Brownsea Castle, created by Henry VIII as a strategic fortification, it briefly based Colonel Thomas Pride in the 1650s following the successful coup d’état and establishing of the Protectorate of Oliver Cromwell after the English Civil War. The island is one of the last places in the British Isles that is still home to the native red squirrel, with most populations now decimated by the more successful grey variant.

Notable people from Poole include Greg Lake, the bassist and guitarist most famous for his time in the progressive rock bands King Crimson and Emerson, Lake & Palmer (ELP). Thriller author John Le Carré, Blue Peter presenter Katy Hill, and popular film director Edgar Wright were also born in the town.

Whether you own stylish semi-detached, classic townhouse or a sleek modern apartment, there are shutters to suit your tastes. Book a free survey today to discover more.
