Part of the South East Dorset conurbation that also comprises Poole and Christchurch with a population of nearly half a million, Bournemouth is one of the largest towns on the south coast, long popular as a seaside resort due to its beautiful sandy beach.
It was with the arrival of the railway in 1870 that led to the substantial growth of Bournemouth. In 1880 the population was just 17,000 but by 1900 had grown by more than 300% to over 60,000, as well as drawing thousands of visitors to holiday throughout the year. As a result, the town’s economy is weighted heavily around the service sector, which makes up over 90% of the local workforce.
Ornamental parks and gardens run through the centre of town, very much based on their Victorian layout, making them Grade II Listed gardens that run for around 3 kilometres along the Bourne Valley. There is an international airport located just to the north of the town, and despite being named in honour of Bournemouth, is actually the other side of the River Stour, and is much closer to the neighbouring town of Ferndown.
Being a larger town, there are obviously a large number of notable people to come from Bournemouth. Hubert Parry, best known as the composer of the famous anthem “Jerusalem” was born in the town, as well as Last of the Summer Wine actress Juliette Kaplan. People such as choirmaster Gareth Malone, Police guitarist Andy Summers, comedian Tony Hancock and Batman actor Christian Bale have also lived in Bournemouth at different times.
