The earliest mention of the Somerset town of Crewkerne appears in 899 AD, with a note from King Alfred the Great leaving the land to his youngest son Aethelweard, helping him to become one of the wealthiest landowners in the then kingdom of Wessex.
One of the many stops on the railway line from London Waterloo to the West Country, Crewkerne station is actually not in the town itself, but to the south east just off of the A356, closer to the village of Misterton. The town is also unusual in that it isn’t built on the banks of a river or shoreline, although the 37-mile long River Parrett does flow to the east of Crewkerne
Unlike many towns around the country, Crewkerne’s castle is almost more myth than it is fact. It is thought that there was a Norman motte and bailey construction to the North West of the town, although all that really exists is a small ditch around a hilltop with a masonry square present, along with some fragments of 12th century pottery. Despite extensive searches by TV’s Time Team in 2011, the results were largely inconclusive, with a remnants of a stone structure thought to be the castle appearing to be unfinished.
