About East Howe

Taking its name from the archaic English word “howe” meaning a stretch of high ground, the residential suburb of East Howe, concurrent with its neighbour West Howe, is in the north of Bournemouth town and can easily be accessed by the main A348 Ringwood Road.

Running through the centre of the suburb, Brook Road in East Howe was once home of Howe Lodge, a grand but rambling manor house with fake battlements that was built by the smuggler and local landowner Isaac Gulliver. Affectionately known as the “King of the Smugglers”, Gulliver had built a sizeable but illegal business, based on his gentle nature, using Howe Lodge as his base, a fact that was discovered in the 1950s when the property was demolished, unveiling hidden places in the walls, a secret room only accessible via a chimney, and a brick tunnel that could be accessed through a cellar.

Kinson Road denotes the way to the ancient village on which East Howe was developed. The area known as Kinson was absorbed into the expanding town of Bournemouth in the 1930s, leading to a change in the county boundary between Hampshire and Dorset. East Howe Lane itself used to be referred to as Headless Cross Lane in reference to the T-shape junction formed with Wimborne Road, before The Broadway was built in 1962.

Whether you live in East Howe itself or other areas of Bournemouth and surrounding areas, there will be a shutter to suit your sense of interior design. Get in touch with us at Shuttercraft and book your free home survey today.
