About Southbourne

Located right on the coast, next to the beach in fact, it is difficult to get much more South than Southbourne, situated in the ever expanding town of Bournemouth close to the stunning geological landmark of Hengistbury Head. The area of Southbourne was the brainchild of Thomas Armetriding Compton, an enterprising young physician, who opened up a medical practice in the town, and saw the potential as a health resort.

Throughout much of its history, Southbourne was known as Stourfield, a reflection on its location next to the banks of the River Stour, and use as agricultural land, particularly for the pigs of Tuckton Farm.

In 1910, the area of Southbourne, while still relatively underdeveloped, played host to the first international aviation meeting held in the UK. A specially laid out aerodrome lasting for about a mile was placed along the relatively flat ground of the area. It was at this event that Charles Stewart Rolls, co-founder of Rolls-Royce, lost his life in an air crash, the first fatality in Britain caused by a powered aircraft.

Southbourne Beach is a popular site in the summer. It is quieter than its neighbour in central Bournemouth, due to a smaller car park and less facilities for holidaymakers. There is a sandy beach that regularly wins the Blue Flag award, and Southbourne also has a funicular railway down to the beach, the most recent in the town, being built in the 1930s.

Shuttercraft Dorset offers a range of custom crafted products from a range of different colours, styles and sizes to suit every taste. Book a free home survey today and discover a choice to complement your interiors.
