Situated to the north of the Southern county of Dorset, on the border with Somerset, the small town of Stalbridge is bordered by the Bibbern Brook, a small tributary of the River Stour. The historic church of St Mary overlooks the town, and is largely based on a 15th century building, with the addition of a 19th century tower after the previous one was in desperate need of repairs.
The town is firmly in the geographical area of Blackmore Vale. As an area of hills, this means that the town lies largely on a gradient. There is more of a noticeable incline on the northern side of the town, with the church at the top of the hill, providing spectacular views from the top of the tower.
One of the most famous people with an association with Stalbridge is the writer Douglas Adams, best known as the author of the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. Much of the acclaimed book was written in his mother’s house in the town, a place she had relocated following an earlier life in Cambridgeshire and Essex.
Stalbridge was once the home of Stalbridge House and Park, a grand countryside home that was occupied at various times by different nobles, starting with the 2nd Earl of Castlehaven, Mervyn Tuchet. Passing into different hands throughout its history, it came into the ownership of the Marquess of Anglesey in 1822, who declared the property unfit for purpose and had it demolished, with the stone being used elsewhere in the town.
Whether you live in Stalbridge itself or in other local areas like Sandy Bay, Exton, Topsham or Otterton, there will be a shutter to suit your home and style. Get in touch with us at Shuttercraft and book your free home appointment today.
