About Wimborne Minster

Named after the Saxon Church at the centre of the town, Wimborne Minster is a historic place filled with many beautiful period properties. Along with the town hall, Priest’s House and local museum, there are many 16th, 17th and 18th-century buildings that house shops and pubs. The town is also home to the Tivoli Theatre, a purpose-built 1930s facility designed for music, drama and film.

Based on the banks of the River Allen, a tributary of the River Stour, Wimborne Minster is roughly on the path of the A31 main road along the south of England that runs between Ringwood and Bere Regis. There are many facilities in the town, including a shopping centre, playing fields, a hospital and many pubs, including The Rising Sun, in a converted watermill on the riverside.

Two significant individuals born in Wimborne Minster include Robert Fripp, the King Crimson progressive rock guitarist also known for his marriage to Toyah Wilcox and their “Sunday Lunch” cover versions. Another name of note tied to the town is Montague Druitt, a Victorian barrister and schoolmaster who is one of the suspects in the Jack the Ripper case of the 1880s.

Since the late 1970s, Wimborne Minster has held an annual folk festival that features music, comedy and dance, specifically morris dancing, as depicted in the 2009 film Morris: A Life With Bells On. The town is also home to one of the largest and longest-running model towns in England. Depicting Wimborne at a 1:10 scale, it roughly reflects how the town looked in the 1950s, with 120 buildings and a 5-metre-high replica of the Minster itself.
