About Anderston

The birthplace of acclaimed comedian, Sir Billy Connolly, the heavily populated area of Anderston in the centre of Glasgow, has also been the home of three prominent Labour politicians. Former Speaker on the House of Commons Michael Martin, former Leader of the Scottish Labour Party and three-time Labour Party Arthur Henderson all had their origins in Anderston.

Originally established as a village of weavers in the 18th century, Anderston grew fairly rapidly as Glasgow’s weaving industry took off, as well as related industries such as bleaching, dyeing and printing. By the time of the Second World War, Anderston’s quick growth had effectively turned the area into tenement housing, much of which was demolished due to the city developing its road infrastructure.

With the M8 motorway running through its centre, and served on the rail network by Anderston railway station, Anderston is just north of the River Clyde.

Local attractions include the OVO Hydro Arena, The Tenement House, and Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum. The latter opened to the public for the first time in 1901 and is one of Scotland’s most popular visitor attractions. Located on the edge of Kelvingrove Park, the museum has 22 galleries that include art, taxidermy and historical artefacts from around the world.
