About Cardonald
Located just off of the A77 south of the River Clyde in the heart of Glasgow, the residential area of Strathbungo is conveniently located for Queens Park and the Pollokshields railway stations. Many of the buildings date from the 1860s onwards, in a tenement style from similar sandstone, giving Strathbungo a very aesthetic appeal.
It is not exactly clear where the name Strathbungo originates from, as the word ‘Strath’ in Gaelic is normally a prefix for a river valley. As there has never been a river in the region referred to as the Bungo, it could be a deformation of the name ‘Mungo’, the patron saint of the city of Glasgow.
Throughout much of its life, Strathbungo has also been referred to as Regents Park. The road named Regent Park Square reflects this alternate name.
Originally established as a small village for weavers in the 18th century, the area became consumed into the wider environs of Glasgow as the city rapidly grew due to the industrial revolution. The ‘Bygone Bungo’ blog is a popular source of local history for the Strathbungo and Crossmyloof areas.
