About Dumbreck

An area in the south of Glasgow that is nestled between the vast greenspace of Pollok Country Park, Maxwell Park, Shawlands and Crossmyloof, Dumbreck is easily accessibly from the M77 motorway.

Dumbreck area is served by the Dumbreck Railway Station, managed by ScotRail and lies on the Paisley Canal Line. It is the closest station for the Bellahouston Park suburb and opened in 1990 to coincide with British Rail’s reopening of the line, which had closed to passengers seven years earlier.

St Leo the Great Roman Catholic Church in Dumbreck is arguably the only place of worship in the area, nestled just off of Urdale Road, a stone’s throw from the M8 motorway. Founded in 1962, St Leo offers a more archaic form of Christian worship that is at odds with the relatively puritan Church of Scotland and its Presbyterian beliefs that make up substantially more of the country’s Christian populace.

Being quite a small part of the wider city of Glasgow, Dumbreck has been fairly overlooked in terms of people of interest. Archie Meiklem, an early 20th century footballer, was born and raised in Dumbreck. He played a few times for Queen’s Park FC, the oldest football team in the world outside of England and Wales, a team name that is often confused with the more famous Queen’s Park Rangers, based in London.
