About Mount Florida
Although there is references from the early Victorian era already referring to a Mount Florida in Glasgow, it is uncertain where the name originally came from. There was once a sizeable manor house at the centre of a 15 acre estate, although traces of this can no longer be found due to the newer developments and properties built on the land.
Interestingly, Mount Florida is home to not one, but two football stadiums, situated next to each other in the Hampden Park complex. The main Hampden Park stadium is the official home of the Scottish National team, with its neighbour (affectionately called Lesser Hampden) being the current home of Queen’s Park FC.
Alan McGee, the owner of the famous Creation Records, along with Bobby Gillespie, the lead singer of Primal Scream, both grew up together in the Mount Florida area, also attending the nearby King’s Park Secondary School together. The two proud Glaswegians were born in other areas of the city but moved to Mount Florida when young.
Nestled between the areas of Shawlands and Crosshill, Mount Florida is well served by a relatively small railway station that provides regular services to both Glasgow Central, and the Renfrewshire village of Neilston, out to the south west of the city.
