Found west of Glasgow, between the River Clyde and Glasgow Airport, Renfrew is closely associated with the historic line of Stewarts, the family famous for its Scottish monarchs, who also gained the English throne under the Personal Union of 1603.
The Stewart family were based at Renfrew Castle, the former stronghold that was originally built in the 12th century by Walter Fitz Alan, Steward of Scotland, on the King’s Inch. The castle was completely demolished in the 18th century, with no remains being left above ground. The King’s Inch itself has been subsumed into the land on the south bank of the river, as redirected waterways meant that the area around the island dried up. Road names reflect where the island used to be separated.
The historic county of Renfrewshire was once governed by Renfrew, but as nearby Paisley grew in population and local standing, the centre of government shifted. When the county was reorganised with all Scottish counties in the late 20th century, Renfrewshire became part of the wider Strathclyde region.
Although much of Renfrew’s former shipbuilding economy has now gone, the outlook for the area remains positive, with significant money being generated by the Braehead shopping centre and entertainment facilities, with bowling, trampolining and crazy golf all available next to a range of retail giants.
