About Clydebank

Located on the northern bank of the River Clyde (where the town gets its name), Clydebank is one of the places rumoured to be the birthplace of the patron saint of Ireland, St Patrick. It is this local legend that gives the suburb of Old Kilpatrick its name. Formerly a village on its own, it has been incorporated into Clydebank’s environs as the town has continued to grow.

In March 1941, German bombers dropped their payloads both in and around Clydebank. In what would later become known as the Clydebank Blitz, the town was seriously damaged as were the local shipyards, meaning that Clydebank has been extensively remodelled since that time. In particular, the main shopping centre and retail park based around Argyll Road, Kilbowie Street and Livingstone Street have seen significant investment in the years following the war.

Wet Wet Wet, the late 80s/early 90s pop group most famous for their 1994 cover of ‘Love Is All Around’, formed at Clydebank High School in the early 1980s. However, only former frontman Marti Pellow was actually from Clydebank, with his bandmates mostly originating from other parts of the wider Glasgow area.

Clydebank is also famous as being the birthplace of Duncan Bannatyne, the entrepreneur and businessman who appeared in twelve series of the popular BBC programme Dragon’s Den and is also famous for his chain of self-named health clubs. James Cosmo, one of the most prolific Scottish actors, known for roles in Game of Thrones, Sons of Anarchy, Braveheart and Trainspotting, was also born in Clydebank in 1948.

The Golden Jubilee National Hospital was opened in 1994 in Clydebank, based on the site of the former Naval Construction Works of William Beardmore and Co, reflecting the continued evolution of the town’s economy away from its shipbuilding roots.
