On the Scottish coast, at the mouth of the River Irvine, the town of Irvine contains part of the oldest continually habited village in Europe, with archaeological remains in the area dating back to as far as the Mesolithic era.
Irvine’s harbour has a long history and once was one of the most prominent ports in Scotland after Glasgow. Going into decline during the Victorian era when Glasgow, Greenock and Port Glasgow achieved higher prominence as sea ports, Irvine still welcomes private vessels, and the harbour front is now home to the town’s arts centre.
As part of celebrations for the Millennium, an exhibition known as The Big Idea opened in the town in 2000. It was constructed on the north side of the River Irvine near the former Nobel quay. Visitors numbers to the museum reached 120,000 in its opening year, however, just three years later, only 50,000 people visited. Sadly that was 20,000 below the requirement to cover operating costs, and so despite the £14 million investment, the museum closed.
Nicola Sturgeon, First Minister of Scotland and leader of the Scottish National Party was born in Irvine in 1970, as well as prominent rock musicians Simon Neil of Biffy Clyro (1979) and Roddy Woomble of Idlewild (1976).
