About Kilmarnock

Perhaps best known for its football club, the oldest professional team in Scotland and a member of the Scottish Premier League, the historic burgh of Kilmarnock has been settled since at least the 7^th century, when it is thought Saint Marnock founded a church there.

A town of relatively modest size, Kilmarnock underwent something of a population boom during the Industrial Revolution when it went through a period of sudden growth. Heavy manufacturing and goods-based services have historically made up the bulk of the local economy, with carpets and shawls made in Kilmarnock being sold and recognised internationally.

The famous Scotch whisky brand Johnnie Walker has been based in Kilmarnock since the mid-19^th century when the son and grandson of former grocer John Walker started selling their own blend of the distilled drink following the Spirits Act of 1860. The brand is now owned by London-based manufacturer Diageo, who closed all Kilmarnock operations in 2012, ending a close association with the town of more than 140 years.

Biffy Clyro, one of the most famous Scottish rock bands of the 21^st century, have a close association with Kilmarnock, as the Johnston brothers, Ben and James were both born in the town, joining forces with Ayr-born Simon Neil before moving to Glasgow. James Prime, keyboard player and founding member of Deacon Blue, was also born in the town.
