About Milngavie

Just south of Mugdock Country Park and Reservoir, the town of Milngavie is sometimes thought to be a suburb of Glasgow, being that it is still on the peripheries of the nearby city, though still retains much of its unique qualities. The town’s name is thought to be Gaelic in origin, either as ‘windmill’ (Muireann Gaoithe) or ‘windy hill’(Meall Na Gaoithe), though the former is more likely due to the town’s location on the banks of Allander Water.

Many people moved to Milngavie from nearby Clydebank following the Second World War as the town had been badly bombed. There had been a local authority housing scheme that had resulted in large-scale housing developments in Milngavie to deal with the influx.

Milngavie is now primarily a dormitory town for commuting into Glasgow and surrounding areas, although there are still a good number of facilities for residents, such as parks, library, golf clubs, and even a couple of art galleries in the centre of town (The Grange and Lillie).

The Milngavie reservoirs are popular among tourists and walkers. Made up of the twin Craigmaddie and Mugdock reservoirs, the facility was opened by Queen Victoria in 1859. The main supply of water for the city of Glasgow, Milngavie can hold up to 548 million imperial gallons of water, although due to droughts it has been some years since it has been filled to capacity.
