About Ayr

Located on the mouth of the River Ayr, which leads out of Scotland’s west coast into the Firth of Clyde, the coastal town of Ayr has existed as a settlement since at least the Stone Age, with a Neolithic standing stone being found in the Doonfoot area.

Having grown around a castle on the banks of the river, Ayr’s unique location has meant that it has acted as a seaport, marketplace and administrative centre since it was properly established in the 13^th century. Ayr’s castle has long since vanished, however, Greenan Castle remains just south of the town and is an iconic fortified tower house, precariously balanced on the cliffside due to extensive coastal erosion.

After the railway line to Glasgow was completed in 1840, Ayr became known as a popular seaside holiday resort due to its fine sandy beach, the sand of which continues round the bay past neighbouring Prestwick and Troon. As with many places in Scotland, Ayr is home to several golf courses of different abilities and hosts national events such as the Scottish Grand National horse race.

Famed Scottish poet Robert Burns was born in Alloway, the small neighbouring village just two miles south of Ayr town centre that is based on the banks of the River Doon. Although moving around, he stayed in the Ayrshire area trying to make a career as a farmer until his later 20s.
