About Pannal
Situated just to the south of Harrogate, and linked to the town via the A61 and railway line, the village of Pannal was originally named Rossett (not to be confused with the other Harrogate suburb). Not to be confused with the suburb of Pannal Ash, the village of Pannal was once home to a thriving market, and potentially existed as a settlement as far back as the Bronze Age.
Maisie Adam, the Northern standup comedian, and regular on TV’s Mock The Week, grew up in Pannal with her parents and brother, before being diagnosed with epilepsy at age 14. Also a sometime panellist on QI, Adam regularly includes anecdotes and jokes about her Yorkshire upbringing in her shows.
Based on the banks of the River Crimple (also known as Crimple Beck), Pannal’s Old English name is thought to suggest a damp hollow, reflecting its location. The village achieved a small amount of infamy in 2020 after a couple were arrested in Pannal on suspicion of modern slavery offences and people trafficking.
