About Wixenford

The small area of Wixenford is located just south of Wokingham and is nestled between Eastheath and the twin villages of Holme Green and Gardeners Green. Emm Brook, a tributary of the River Loddon, runs through Wixenford, and the waterway eventually leads to the River Thames, many miles away.

Wixenford is part of the civil parish of Wokingham Without, formed in 1894 when the jurisdiction of the town was split into two parts – one rural and one urban. The area curves around the outer skirts of Wokingham, forming a west-facing crescent shape. The parish includes a number of small hamlets and villages, stretching down to Ravenswood to the south, closer geographically to the town of Crowthorne, but administratively still within Wokingham.

Wixenford is mainly known for the Ludgrove School, one of the most prestigious independent boarding schools, and is one of the few remaining boys-only educational facilities of its kind in the UK. Ludgrove is based on the grounds of the former Wixenford School, specially built as a school for pupils of Wixenford House in Hampshire. Ludgrove School has been home to many prominent individuals over the years, such as members of the Royal household (Princes William and Harry), survival expert and presenter Bear Grylls, and former British Prime Minister Alec Douglas-Home.
