About Bathampton
With the Kennet and Avon Canal running through the centre of the village, and the River Avon just to the north, Bathampton is in an incredibly scenic part of Somerset, and has been settled since at least the Iron Age, when a fort was situated just east of its current location.
Formerly served by its own railway station, the village of Bathampton was once the main home of plasticine production in the UK, after resident William Harbutt invented the substance in 1897, and set up a factory in 1900, which continued manufacturing until 1983.
Bathampton Meadows is an area of green space alongside the River Avon. Consisting of wetlands and fields, the meadows are popular with water birds such as plovers, sandpipers, kingfishers and sand martins. In 2017, the meadows were proposed by the local council as the site of a new Park and Ride site, however, due to strong opposition by both the land’s current owner and the wider public, the plans were abandoned almost immediately.
