About Shepton Mallet
The town of Shepton Mallet is situated along the banks of the River Sheppey, in the county of Somerset. It is around five miles from Wells and 18 miles from Bristol.
The name is derived from Old English words, scoep and tun, meaning sheep farm and it is mentioned in the Doomsday Book as Sceaptun. Shepton Mallet has a lovely location amidst the countryside, much of which is farmland, and woodland and lies on the route of the ancient Roman road, Fosse Way.
There are no less than 218 listed buildings in Shepton Mallet. The 50 ft high market cross sits in the small town centre and was a gift from Walter Buckland in 1520. There are two main streets called High Street and Market Place with some interesting shops, pubs and cafés.
