About Wellow
Giving its name to a nearby brook that runs into the River Frome (Wellow Brook), the beautiful village of Wellow falls into the southernmost reaches of the reaches of Cotswolds, despite being firmly found in Somerset. Until 1966 the village was connected via the Somerset and Dorset Joint Railway – the rail route is now part of a cycle trail. During the 1970s, artist Peter Blake, known for his work with the Beatles, lived in the converted station building, using the old signal box as a studio.
The Parish of Wellow lies three miles south of Bath and five miles northeast of Radstock. Despite its relatively small size, Wellow once boasted up to five Public Houses. At one time, the village was home to The New Inn, The George, The Canteen, The Royal Oak and Ford Farm. The building of the New Inn is still used as a pub and is named the Fox and Badger after some of the residents.
Despite what seems to be a sleepy little village in Somerset, Wellow is home to one of the country’s best examples of a Neolithic chambered tomb. Stoney Littleton Long Barrow is around a mile outside the village and remained fully intact until about 1760.
