About Goole
An in-land port town in Yorkshire, Goole boasts both the stillness of the countryside, and a modern town centre. On the outskirts stand distinctive water towers and Victorian buildings, set alongside tall cranes and derricks, owed to Goole’s maritime and industrial heritage. In the town centre you will find a vehicle-free shopping centre, in addition to a bounty of quiet parks and beautiful gardens.
In 1823, the Aire and Calder Navigation Company built a canal from Leeds to Goole, which led to the first street, Adam street, being built in 1826. It is on Adam Street that the town centre now stands. For 150 years, the port was a pivotal distribution centre for the coal arriving from the Yorkshire coalfields. Even today, the dock remains Goole’s leading industry, handling 2 million tonnes of cargo per annum.
In August 1915, 60 bombs were dropped on the dock, resulting in 16 deaths. A memorial now stands to commemorate those thar lost their lives.
