About Lyndhurst

Often seen as the gateway to the New Forest, the quiet countryside village of Lyndhurst becomes a hub of activity during summer months, where it becomes a thriving tourist destination. Situated on one of the main roads leading into the forest (A337), Lyndhurst is also known for an iconic tree at the top of a small mound known as Bolton’s Bench, just outside the village centre, which is thought to be the inspiration for the New Forest National Park logo.

The New Forest Heritage Centre Museum is a good place for families to start their New Forest experience. Giving a good run down of the history of the area with a wealth of artefacts, there are displays held throughout the year, often showing local artists’ work. The car park by the museum is one of the main stops for the New Forest Tour, an open-topped bus tour of the area that is popular among sightseers.

In later life, Lyndhurst was home to Alice Hargreaves, formerly Alice Liddell, said to be the inspiration for Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland novel, although beyond lending her name, there is much debate as to how much of an inspiration she was for the character. She is now buried in the churchyard at St Michael’s and All Angels, at the top of the high street on the western edge of the village.
