About Brockenhurst
Centrally located in the New Forest area, Brockenhurst can be found on the main A337 road between Lymington and the M27. With the Lymington River running through the village, there are two iconic areas of water, with a popular picnic spot and rope swing just north near the Balmer Lawn Hotel, and a watersplash ford on Brookley Road.
Although the area of the New Forest itself has had small settlements for many thousands of years, Brockenhurst is the one with what is thought to be the oldest church in the New Forest, dedicated to St. Nicholas, on the outskirts of the village. Brockenhurst referred to as Broceste in the Domesday Book of 1086 and is the first historical record of a church in the area.
Despite being a relatively small and sleepy countryside village, Brockenhurst played an important role in the First World War. In 1914 a temporary hospital was established in Brockenhurst to treat Indian service personnel that had been injured in France, which was taken over by the New Zealand military in 1916, becoming the No 1 New Zealand General Hospital. Now used as a hotel, the story is reflective of the active role that the New Forest played in both world wars.
