About Andover
Built around the banks of the River Anton, which joins the River Test just south of the town, Andover has a rich and varied history stretching back as far as the Saxon period, when King Edred built the royal hunting lodge in the area.
Due to the prominence of the river in the town, watermills have played an important part in Andover’s history, with six being identified in the Domesday Book. The Town Mills pub and Rooksbury Mill still survive to this day, providing links to the town’s past. There is still a large flour mill close to the railway station, although this is not powered by the river.
There is a diverse range of employers based in Andover, notably tea wholesaler Twinings, lift manufacturers Stannah and insurance company Simplyhealth. The town also has an association with the military, with bases in nearby Wallop, Tidworth and Ludgershall, although there is no presence within Andover itself.
A market town for much of its history, Andover has adapted and altered many of its older buildings, rather than replacing them. Many newer properties have also been built since the town was joined to the West of England Main Line to London, leading to rapid expansion in the mid 20th century. This diversity of window shapes and sizes has led to an increasing interest in window shutters among the residents of the town.
