About Salisbury
Based near the Neolithic sites of Stonehenge and Avebury, there have been settlements in the Salisbury area since at least the Iron Age, when the natural open plains and nearby water provided an excellent place for hunting and raising livestock. Based around fortifications on the local hills, Old Sarum, as it formerly known, shifted its focus after the cathedral was moved to its present location in the early 13th century.
Salisbury Cathedral has been right at the city’s centre since it was completed, being featured in numerous works of art, such as by John Constable in 1831, with the cathedral’s school continuing to take choristers to this day. Located around the cathedral’s grounds are a number of large manor houses that have now been converted into tourist attractions such as Mompesson House and the Salisbury Museum.
