About Redditch

Redditch is in the county of Worcestershire, around 15 miles from Birmingham. Although today it is a thriving, modern town, there is a commemorative plaque in Alcester Street showing its first mention in 1348, when it was called Red Ditch, probably referring to the Red Clay that formed in the nearby River Arran.

At one time it was the international centre for the production of needles and fishing tackle. This has now largely been replaced by light industry – both Halfords and GKN have their headquarters here. Put this together with historical sites, such as the ruins of Bordesley Abbey and the medieval Moons Moat, it is no wonder that there has been the need for new housing.
