Darley Abbey Mills | The Brew Shed, Derby DE22 1DZ
North of Derby, just off the Queensway and on the banks of the river Derwent, thirsty pilgrims will find the Derventio Brewery. Based within the world Heritage site in Darley Abbey, the brewery draws on the rich local history for its inspiration.
Named after the Roman settlement that would later become Derby, Derventio Brewery offers a brewery tour on selected weekends.
Having opened its doors 10 years ago, Derventio Brewery produces a selection of cask and bottle beers, as well as a range of winter beers. You can buy them from the store or enjoy them in a variety of pubs in the Derby area.
The brewery produces 4 beers: 2 pale ales, a stout and an amber ale. This small, but diverse range offers something to any beer lover. The brewer also produces limited edition brews, such as Winter King, Spartan and Eagle Porter.
During the tour, you’ll learn about the fascinating process by which beer is brewed, and your friendly and informative guide will give you a background of the brewery and an explanation of its daily running. The experience also includes a delicious tasting session.
If a tour is not enough, you can even roll up your sleeves and become an apprentice brewer for the day. You will help the head brewer and learn the basics of beer making, before getting stuck in to mix, siphon and pump your own beer.
The experience includes a mid-morning bacon sandwich, hot drinks throughout the day and lunch, including a real ale tasting session. All budding brewers leave with a beer gift, a testament to your hard work.
Derby has a rich and interesting brewing history that goes hand in hand with its industrial history. And Derventio Brewery is a perfect example of this tradition.
