About Swadlincote
Originally named “Swartlings Cottas”, Swadlincote developed around a small manor and workers’ homes, being part of the Gresley parish until the Victorian era.
The prevalence of clay and coal in the region led to a period of rapid urbanisation, with Swadlincote manufacturing a large number of sewage resistant pipes, particularly after the Public Health Act of 1875. Sharpe’s Pottery Museum celebrates the town’s close relationship with the pottery industry and is a popular attraction among visitors to the wider Derbyshire area.
