About Ashbourne
Located just south of the Peak District, Ashbourne is a market town home to many historical buildings such as the Early English styled St Oswald’s Church, which dates to approximately the year 1220. Until the mid-noughties, food company Nestlé had a substantial presence in the town, producing condensed milk and bottled water for a number of years.
The economy of the area now relies heavily on tourism, in particular, due to its proximity to local landmarks such as Dovedale National Nature Reserve and Carsington Water.
Also, the key to the area is local agriculture, and in particular, the annual Ashbourne Show is an important part of the rural ethos of the town, with a particular emphasis on the shire horses for which the event was originally known. The area proved an ideal centre point for the local agricultural community, due to the town’s function as a meeting point of six coaching roads.
Although the cobbled market place retains the town’s links with its past, 2005 establishing of Ashbourne as a Fairtrade town indicates where the area is headed.
