About Bentley
Based around the A19 and near to the banks of the River Don, Bentley is a former mining village that has been expanded and developed over the years into its current role as a suburb of Doncaster. Mill Dike runs through the area, draining into the river, and it is due to these water courses that makes Bentley an area known to be liable to flooding, more recently in both 2007 and 2019.
Throughout Bentley’s extensive history, it was under the land ownership of a number of minor nobles and landed gentry, most notably Sir Arthur Ingram of York, the noted investor and politician who was a member of parliament on several occasions in the first half of the 17th century.
As with many places around Yorkshire, Bentley was once home to a coal mine that provided widescale employment in the area. Bentley Colliery was operational between 1906 and 1993, suffering a tragedy in 1931 when a gas explosion led to the loss of 45 miners. Despite apparently reserves of coal remaining underground, following its closure, the colliery land was totally cleared and has been converted into the Bentley Community Woodland and Pit Lake, a green space popular with dog walkers.
