About Ellesmere Port
Conveniently located at the end of the Wirral peninsula, with Manchester Ship Canal running past and the M53 on its doorstep, Ellesmere Port is unsurprisingly still a port town and is also home to the largest collection of canal boats in the world, courtesy of the National Waterways Museum.
Situated almost directly north of Chester, just 6 miles away from the city’s centre, Ellesmere Port forms part of the Cheshire West and Chester local authority. Although settlements existed in the area at the time of the Domesday Book, Ellesmere Port didn’t grow into a township until the tail end of the 19th century, when there was an influx of houses being built around the docks to cater both for the docks and the town’s growing iron industry.
The town is famous for being one of the last factories producing Vauxhall cars in the UK. Employing around 1800 staff and capably of producing around 187,000 vehicles per year, the Ellesmere Port plant produced the Astra range and its sister car, the Astra Sports Tourer, and in 2021 received a substantial investment to repurpose for the dedicated production of electric vehicles.
The Ellesmere Port skyline is dominated by the Stanlow Oil Refinery, the second largest refinement facility in the UK behind Fawley in the New Forest. Another key feature is the Blue Planet Aquarium, which was the largest marine and freshwater attraction when it opened in 1998, and is still the largest in the North West.
