About Worksop
The commuter town of Worksop is located in the Bassetlaw district of Nottinghamshire and has fantastic transport routes via rail and road to places such as Sheffield, Chesterfield and Mansfield. Birthplace of Iron Maiden singer Bruce Dickinson, Worksop is home to a factory for Premier Foods, manufacturer of many famous brands like Bisto, OXO and Sharwoods.
Officially titled the Priory Church of Saint Mary and Saint Cuthbert, the local Anglican church is more commonly referred to as Worksop Priory. Originally part of Augustinian Priory founded in 1103, the church building consists of a nave and detached gatehouse. The illuminated medieval manuscript known as the Tickhill Psalter was originally written and illustrated at Worksop and is now held in New York Public Library.
One of the National Trust’s smallest properties, Mr Straw’s House, is found in Worksop. Unlike many of their lavish country homes, this is a modest semi-detached property that tells the story of a grocer’s family in the Midlands. The family donated the home to the National Trust to provide a glimpse of a forgotten time.
