About Bingham
Situated near the junction of the A52 and the A46, Bingham is a market town east of Nottingham that was named the best location to bring up a family in 2013. There has been a settlement at Bingham since the Roman era when a fortress was built on the Fosse Way, although the current location of the town is not exactly the same as when it was known as Margidunum.
On the mainline between Nottingham and Skegness, there are regular train services stopping at Bingham. The town also still holds a regular market, having gained a charter to do so in 1341 from King Edward III. Although Gothic in style, Bingham’s Butter Cross was in fact only built-in 1861 and forms the centre point of the weekly market.
Until the year 2000, RAF Newton was located close to Bingham, in the nearby village of Newton, being used as a bomber base during the Second World War, and later as a flying training school. The disused airfield is now primarily used for offices and storage space, although it was featured briefly in the acclaimed 2006 film “This Is England”.
