About Mansfield

The large market town of Mansfield is found in the Maun Valley area of Nottinghamshire, at the western edge of the county. Just to the east of the town is Sherwood Forest, most famously associated with the legends of Robin Hood, the outlaw said to have robbed from the rich to give to the poor.

Settlement in the Mansfield area has been proven to date at least from Roman times. A villa was discovered Major Hayman Rooke in 1787 between nearby Mansfield Woodhouse and Pleasley as well as a stack of denarii coins near King’s Mill later in 1849. Early English royalty are said to have stayed in the region, with Mercian Kings using it as a base for hunting.

Mansfield has a large square at the centre surrounded by both commercial and retail hubs. There is a museum, the Palace Theatre, restaurants, fast-food outlets, pubs, bars and night clubs. Titchfield Park, with its highly rated café, offers views over the river Maun, with large grassy areas on each bank. There is a bowls green, tennis courts, children’s play area, many flowerbeds and a basketball court for public usage.

It is connected via the A60 to Nottingham, and Mansfield is also linked to the M1 Great North road via the twin roads of the A617 to the north, and the A38 to the south.

The town of Mansfield has had an interesting history, and with many facilities for people living there, it is a good place to live, in spite of its sometimes less than desirable reputation.
