About Witney
Recorded as early as AD 969 (as “Wyttannige”), and mentioned in the 1086 Domesday Book as Witenie, the scenic market town of Witney enjoys a number of older buildings tied to its history such as the iconic Butter Cross. Being situated so close to the Cotswolds means that there are a number of buildings in the town crafted from the iconic stone.
Situated on the banks of the River Windrush, Witney has a place in British history due to it being the centre of the woollen blanket industry since the Middle Ages. Just 13 miles west of Oxford, Witney has retained much of its antiquated charm and has a number of attractions in the surrounding area such as Cogges Manor Farm.
Founded in 1660, the Henry Box School (also known as Witney Grammar) is named after a local grocer who made his fortune in London. Notable people to have attended the school are actresses Diana Hardcastle and Gugu Mbatha-Raw as well as actor Robert Llewellyn, who was expelled at the age of 16 for arguing with the headmaster.
Known as a safe area for the Conservative party, both Douglas Hurd and former Prime Minister David Cameron have both served as MPs for Witney.
