About Matlock
Matlock is a unique county town that is built on steep hillsides, the height of the area varying from 91m at the bottom of the valley to 203m, the top of Wellington Street. From the heights within the area, the town is overlooked by Masson Hill and Riber Castle.
To tackle the steep hills and roads in the town, a cable tramway was built in 1893, up Bank Road. At the time it was built it was the steepest tramway in the world. The tramway closed in 1927 due to under used in the progression of cars and buses. Bank road still homes many local landmark buildings, including The Crown Hotel, Our Lady & St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and The Police Station.
