Gloucester city is known as the cathedral city of the Cotswolds. With a long and unique history dating back to Roman times, this is a city with lots of interesting history.

The city is located in Gloucestershire, which is the 53rd largest settlement in the UK when measuring by population. The city sits on the bank of the River Severn and is close to the Cotswolds, the Forest of Dean and the Malvern Hills.

Gloucester city began as a Roman town, next to the River Severn, however in the 4th century, the Romans left and the Saxons took over. A monastery was founded here and trade and craftsmen began to grow and develop in the town.

In 1085 William the Conqueror came to Gloucester and ordered the first Domesday Book to be written, and information to be documented and published. We can see from the Domesday Book that Gloucester had a population of around 3,500 at this time.

Industry started to thrive, and tanners, shoemakers, glovers and blacksmiths were working and trading in the area.

Fast forward into the 20th and 21st century and the city is now hugely developed, with both industry and population growing into an established city over the years.

The city has continuously grown and developed throughout these centuries, one key event in history for the city being the building of the municipal airport, was opened in Gloucester in the 30’s. The city of Gloucester currently has a population of around 128,000.

The city carries on lots of traditions, including commemorating the Siege of Gloucester which occurred in 1643 and The Three Choirs Festival, which originated in the 18th century.

There are lots of attractions in the city including Gloucester City Museum and Art Gallery, Gloucester Waterways Museum, Beatrix Potter Museum, Gloucester Brewery and events such as Gloucester Tall Ships.
