About Ely

Surrounded by fenland in the heart of Cambridgeshire, the cathedral city of Ely is built on a 23-square-mile “island” of sedimentary clay deposits that make the land more prominent than the surrounding area. The River Great Ouse runs through the relatively small city and provided the primary means of transport until fen draining meant that roads could be constructed. The river remains a popular place for boating in the county, and a large marina houses a range of boats.

The most prominent part of Ely’s skyline is the Cathedral, which originates from the 7th century, with the majority of the current building dating from the 11th century. One of the most striking features is the central octagonal tower, a 14th-century work of architectural genius resulting from an earlier tower’s collapse.

Being a city full of historical buildings and exciting architecture, Ely is also famous for Oliver Cromwell’s House, the residence of the politician and reformer between 1636 and 1646, during the height of the English Civil War. The Bishop’s Palace still incorporates 15th-century towers, and The Maltings is a Victorian malt processing plant that now operates as a live entertainment venue following a significant redevelopment programme.

The King’s School is one of the oldest educational establishments in the world, and despite its modest exterior and setting, it has origins dating back as far as 970 AD. King Henry VIII gave the independent day and boarding school its royal charter. Many of Ely’s formerly monastic buildings are now leased to the school by the cathedral, including the infirmary, Prior’s House, Barn and Porta.
