About Godmanchester
Located just the other side of the River Great Ouse from neighbouring Huntingdon, the town of Godmanchester is built on the site of the Roman town of Durovigutum, with the name likely coming from the 9th century and the Saxon King Guðrum.
One of the most beautiful features of the town is Godmanchester’s Chinese Bridge, connecting the Causeway and town centre to a water meadow, now home to a play area and recreation ground. Local legend made out that the 19th-century construction was made without nails or fixings. The Chinese Bridge, now standing in the town, is a replica from 2010 to replace the original structure that had been ageing and corroding for some time.
The parish church of St Mary the Virgin started to be built in the 13th century, with adaptations and fixes at regular intervals throughout its history. St Mary’s has featured an incredibly prominent part of the skyline due to its spire a few times on the BBC’s Songs of Praise, even including a new hymn tune called Godmanchester that was written for the programme.
As well as the river running past the town, there are good transport links, whether via road (the A1307 Cambridge Road) or train travel at Huntingdon’s Victorian-era railway station, still in regular use.
