About Ilfracombe

Overlooking the expanse of the Bristol Channel, the seaside resort of Ilfracombe on the North Devon coast is nestled in a natural harbour surrounded by cliffs. Due to its location, Ilfracombe was an obvious place for a maritime community to thrive, with the local economy being dominated by herring fishing for many years. Under the reign of George III, Ilfracombe was also the home of a significant naval presence, including many key officers.

Since at least the mid-17th century, a light has been displayed from the 14th-century St Nicholas’ Chapel on top of Lantern Hill to guide ships entering the harbour. The use of the chapel for worship purposes stopped during the Reformation, and it was converted into a cottage that fell into a state of disrepair before renovation in the 20th century.

Next to the Promenade at the town’s seafront, the Landmark Theatre is an iconic building, sometimes affectionately referred to as “Madonna’s Bra” due to the twin conical structures. Next to the theatre is the town’s museum, set up in the 1930s in a late Victorian building, containing some local history items and more unique exhibits such as pickled bats, shrunken heads and two-headed kittens.

Ilfracombe is one of the only places left on the UK mainland that still provides a ferry service to the scenic Lundy Island. Located off of the Devon coast, the tiny island is home to around 30 people, as well as a puffin population, melanistic rabbits, a distinct breed of wild pony and even an endemic type of cabbage unique to the British Isles!
